Position Summary

Performs blood collection by venipuncture and capillary methods, for a variety of laboratory tests and procedures to be used in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Collects chain of custody drug screens for various companies. Periodically oversees collections performed by phlebotomy or medical assisting students. Performs some registration functions to include patient data entry and order entry as well as specimen receiving, processing and distribution functions. Provides customer service support to technical staff and laboratory clients.

Responsibilities

Identify patients appropriately. Performs patient requisition entry, one click registrations, and places orders as requested by providers using correct diagnosis information. Collects and labels samples correctly. Prepares samples for shipment to reference labs creating packing lists as needed. Collects chain of custody drug screens. Performs therapeutic phlebotomy collections. Clerical duties. Follows written and verbal instructions. Adapts schedule to needs of lab. Uses appropriate safety and infection control measures. Participates in training of phlebotomy students. Responsible for inpatient collections and processing, outpatient collections and processing as well as sendout processing.  

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program or Phlebotomy Program. Minimum of 6 months of phlebotomy experience preferred. Requires a working knowledge of handling blood, body fluids and other lab specimens, according to infection control guidelines. 

 

Valid drivers license with a driving record that meets the criteria to drive a FirstHealth vehicle.
